Maintaining a new package

Finally I made myself time to finish foremost’s package. foremost is a console program to recover lost files based on their headers, footers, and internal data structures.

I’ve declared intentions to adopt it about a month ago, but legal matters (copyright and licenses) delayed my work. In short, foremost’s former maintainers didn’t grant a license to debian/* files. I’ve emailed them asking what license did they give to their work, but I never got a response. After waiting a reasonable amount of time, I’ve decided to do the packaging stuff from scratch.

The package needed some love. I’ve bumped its standards version to 3.9.3. I’ve also rewritten d/rules (now it uses debhelper 9), added a machine readable copyright and renamed and cleaned the only patch it had.

The package is now in m.d.n. At the moment it is still waiting for a sponsor. One can download the package with dget using this command:

dget -ux

If you’re allowed to, feel free to sponsor it! It has been assigned bug number 672899 of sponsorship-requests pseudo-package.

Update: Aron Xu has sponsored the package and got it into testing, in spite of the freeze. Thanks, Aron!
